Irish Derby: Ruler of The World, Libertarian get rematch

Ruler of The World and Libertarian, the first two finishers of the Group 1 English Derby at Epsom Downs on June 1, will have a rematch in Saturday’s $1,625,000 Irish Derby at The Curragh.

For the Group 1 Irish Derby, Libertarian has a new owner.

A colt by New Approach, Libertarian was purchased privately by Sheikh Mohammed’s Godolphin Racing after the English Derby. A winner of 2 of 4 starts, Libertarian has remained with trainer Elaine Burke for the Irish Derby.

Ruler of The World, who was listed as the 11-10 favorite Thursday by Irish bookmakers, is unbeaten in three starts for owners Derrick Smith, Michael Tabor, and Susan Magnier and trainer Aidan O’Brien. Last year, those same owners and trainer watched Camelot sweep the English and Irish derbies as well as the English 2000 Guineas.

Ruler of The World did not start in the English 2000 Guineas in early May. A colt by Galileo, Ruler of The World beat maidens in his career debut at The Curragh in April and followed with a win in the Group 3 Chester Vase at Chester, England, on May 9. In the English Derby over 1 1/2 miles, Ruler of The World closed from seventh in a field of 12 to win by 1 1/2 lengths.

For the Irish Derby over 1 1/2 miles, Ruler of The World will be ridden by Joseph O’Brien, the trainer’s son, who rides first call for the stable. Joseph O’Brien rode Ruler of The World to his maiden win. Ryan Moore was aboard for the wins at Chester and Epsom but is booked to ride at Newmarket, England, on Saturday.

The Irish Derby drew a field of nine. Libertarian was the 7-2 second choice, followed by Trading Leather at 5-1. Libertarian and Trading Leather were first and second in the Group 2 Dante Stakes at York, England, in May. Trading Leather has since won a minor stakes in Ireland.
