Irad Ortiz Jr. released from hospital after three-horse spill

ELMONT, N.Y. - Jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. was released from North Shore Hospital Wednesday evening after tests showed that he had not broken any bones in an ugly three-horse spill in Wednesday’s eighth race at Belmont Park. Ortiz had been transported from the turf course to a waiting ambulance on a back-board.

Cornelio Velasquez and John Velazquez, who also went down in the spill, walked off the course and were seen and released by the first-aid department.

Roses for Romney, with Ortiz aboard, appeared to clip heels and fell in midstretch of the seven-furlong race over the Widener turf course. Ear D’ Rhythm, with Cornelio Velasquez up, could not avoid the falling Roses for Romney and also went down. Violet Hour, ridden by Velazquez, fell over Roses for Romney and Ear D’ Rhythm.

Roses for Romney was fatally injured in the spill, while Ear D’ Rhythm and Violet Hour got up, ran off, and were caught.

im not saying anybody's to blame here, but if jockeys respected each other and did not engage in reckless riding this sport would be a lot safer. Just look at the number of inquiries at U.S. tracks daily...probably more in one day than japan.hong kong and australia combined for a month.

Another horrible tragedy. I'm happy for the jockeys and 2 horses that survived, but my heart again breaks with another lost equine athlete. Enjoy Heaven's Meadow, Roses; you are in good company.

Irad is a class act. I'm really glad that he wasn't seriously injured. He has continued to improve each year he's been riding, he's low key and he tries hard to get to the wire!!! Feel better real soon Irad!!! - RAMMER

It is not that this came totally out of the blue. Following is part of the DRF chart comment on Roses for Romney from her previous race on May 31 -"Roses for Romney keen to go in the early stages out of the dogged legged chute, fought the bit a bit rank under restraint and was wrangled off heels straightening down the backside" etc. Well I guess this time she wasn't successfully "wrangled off heels". Maybe someone should be held accountable?

I would always laugh at the horse's name. Dem here. But seriously, sure as heck never wanted that horse die on the track. Glad all the others (jocks and horses ) survived. Condolences to the connect of Roses for Romney. Glad I didn't see the race. Hope today is spill free.
