Iowa TBOA stallion season auction under way

The 2015 Iowa Thoroughbred Breeders and Owners Association online stallion season auction is now online, running through Dec. 12.

Seasons from more than 180 stallions residing in 16 states are on offer, with the proceeds funding three stakes races for all 2017 offspring of stallions whose seasons are sold at the auction: the 2019 Iowa Stallion Futurity and two races for 3-year-olds in 2020, one for males and one for females.

A $5,000 bonus will be paid to the winner of any of the three races if the foal is conceived from a breeding season purchased at the auction. A bonus of the same amount also will be paid to the stallion donor of the winning horse in each race.

"Frequently, you might get the stallion for a lesser price than you normally get," said Deb Leech, president of the ITBOA. "If I live in Oklahoma and there's an Oklahoma stallion I want to breed to, I may get him for less than I'd get breeding to him in another way."

Since converting to an online auction in 2010, proceeds have risen from $50,000 in 2009 to $194,884 in 2014.

"It's really made a huge difference for us," Leech said. "Since we've gone online, it's really bumped up the totals."

Stallions with seasons offered in the auction stand in Iowa, Kentucky, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, Nebraska, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, and Pennsylvania.
