The Iowa Thoroughbred Breeders and Owners Association stallion season auction, one of the organization’s biggest fundraisers, will open Saturday, Dec. 6.

The online auction will begin Dec. 6, and will close on Saturday, Dec. 13 at 7 p.m. Central. Seasons from more than 165 stallions from 20 states will be included among the offerings.

Proceeds from the auction will fund three stakes races for all offspring of stallions whose seasons are sold at the auction: the 2018 Iowa Stallion Futurity and a pair of races in 2019, one for males and one for females.

Since 2008, the Stallion Futurity and Stallion Stakes have each averaged more than $90,000 in purses. The 2014 edition of the Stallion Futurity had a total purse of $96,131, and 2015 will be the first time the program will offer a race for 3-year-old fillies.

A $5,000 bonus will be paid to the winner of any of the three races if the foal is conceived from a breeding season purchased at the auction. There is also an automatic $5,000 bonus to the person who donates the stallion season if a foal by one of their stallions wins one of the races.

Proceeds have nearly tripled since the auction changed to an online format in 2012, growing from $50,000 in 2009 to over $146,000 in 2013, with winning bidders from 21 states and Canada.

"It's really made a huge difference for us," said Deb Leech, president of the ITBOA. "Since we've gone online, it's really bumped up the totals."

The list of stallions included in the auction feature 39 who stand for an advertised fee of $5,000 or more, including Shackleford, Tale of Ekati, To Honor and Serve, Fort Larned, James Street, Discreetly Mine, Morning Line, Twirling Candy, Liaison, Bellamy Road, and Colonel John.
