Intact tries to make amends

EDMONTON, Alberta - Intact, trained by Stu Simon, will be given an opportunity Saturday to salvage a season for which great things had been anticipated.

Intact drew post 2 in a compact field of five 3-year-olds who will compete at 1 1/16 miles under allowance terms in the $18,100 feature at Northlands Park.

A British Columbia-bred, Intact launched his season with two successive second-place finishes, including the President's Handicap at Stampede Park.

Then, after he won the Hoofprint on My Heart handily, the bettors sent Intact off as the favorite in the Alberta Derby.

Intact disappointed badly in the Derby, finishing last to Lord Shogun in a field of 11, and to the chagrin of Simon and other his connections the gelding mysteriously did not regain his winning form all summer.

Quincy Welch will ride Intact for the first time.

Opposing Intact will be Regal Randy, Regal Ability, Topwynson, and Monster Mckilts.

Regal Randy, an erratic performer who won the Saskatchewan Derby, will break from the outside post.

Regal Ability, who will be ridden by Perry Winters, earned a small slice of the Canadian Derby pot with a fifth-place finish. Regal Randy was sixth there, and Topwynson ninth.

Topwynson will be seeking his fourth victory of the year, rising from the $15,000 claiming level to the $32,000 level in optional claiming.

Monster Mckilts is coming off a good third and a victory in allowance/optional claimers.
