Inside Straight prevails in Manitoba Derby

The favored Inside Straight outran Woodbine shipper Ruck in the stretch to capture the $75,000 Manitoba Derby in the slop on holiday Monday at Assiniboia Downs.

With Scott Stevens aboard, Inside Straight raced in fourth on the backstretch with Ruck to his inside as Break the Silence set fast fractions, with Media Melee in close proximity.

Inside Straight went three wide around the leaders on the far turn, while Ruck awaited room along the rail under Omar Moreno. Inside Stretch outkicked Ruck in the stretch to score by 1 1/4 lengths in 1:52.60 for the 1 1/8 miles.

Power Driven finished third, and Solve was fourth in the seven-horse field of 3-year-olds.

It was the third Manitoba Derby victory for Stevens, who rode the son of Kentucky Derby winner Super Saver with confidence.

“I’ve been praying for rain because he loves the mud,” said Stevens. “I got him in a good position when we turned up the backside. They were in a lot of trouble at that point because I was sitting on a lot of horse, just waiting for the time to go. He’s a very nice horse.”

Inside Straight ($4.90) earned $45,900 for owner Randy Howg and trainer Robertino Diodoro.
