Innovative Idea, ridden by Rafael Bejarano, wins the Iowa Distaff by three-quarters of a length Friday night.

Super Majesty was the odds-on favorite to win the $100,000 Iowa Distaff on Friday at Prairie Meadows, but Innovative Idea proved the stronger horse on the night.

Those two staged their own match race within the seven-runner Iowa Distaff, racing well in front of the rest of the pack through fast fractions of 23.32 and 46.94 seconds. Innovative Idea, a 9-1 shot, always was traveling well, and it was she who got the better of Super Majesty after a stretch-long duel, winning by three-quarters of a length. It was more than 10 lengths back to third-place Ghost Locket.

Rafael Bejarano rode the winner and swept the card’s two stakes when he piloted American Freedom to victory in the Iowa Derby one race later.

The 4-year-old Innovative Idea – bred by Darley, owned by Godolphin, and trained by Eoin Harty – ran the race of her life in her 15th start. Racing as she has done throughout her career without Lasix, Innovative Idea ran faster during the early and middle stages than she ever had before but still proved a willing attacker when asked to run down the leader.

The daughter of Bernardini and Golden Velvet (by Seeking the Gold) won for the fifth time in 15 starts while scoring her first stakes win. She was timed in 1:43.30 for 1 1/16 miles on a fast track and paid $20.60 to win.
