Indiana Downs: Short Round, Harbor Cat take statebred stakes


Short Round came from far back in the field of 3-year-old Indiana-breds to win the $85,000 The Snack, one of two stakes run at Indiana Downs on Wednesday evening.

Originally scheduled for a mile on the turf, The Snack was moved to a sloppy main track and contested at a mile and 70 yards.

After overcoming a bad start, Short Round was eighth early in the field of 11. Jockey Orlando Mojica went to work on Short Round in the stretch and he got up in time to win by three-quarters of a length.

 Seal Beach finished second, a  length and a quarter in front of Clyde Park in third.

Trained by Gary Patrick, Short Round returned $16.20 to win and was timed in 1.44.68 over the sloppy, sealed track.

In the $85,000 Ellen's Lucky Star for 3-year-old statebred fillies, Harbor Cat overcame a bad start to draw off to a 1 1/4-length win.

Jockey Jon Court kept Harbor Cat within striking position until the top of the stretch of the mile and 70-yard event that was taken off the turf. Court kept her in a perfect position in the nine horse field before making the winning move.

Trained by Mike Lauer, Harbor Cat was part of a two-horse entry with Dingaling, who finished third to Allie Earpp, who finished second by 5 1/4 lengths.

Harbor Cat ran covered the distance in 1.45.37 and returned $3.20 to win.
