Indiana Downs: Express Model rallies to victory in Indiana Stallion

SHELBYVILLE, Ind. – Express Model came from off the pace to win Wednesday’s $90,090 Indiana Stallion at Indiana Downs.

Trained by Bernie Flint and ridden by Leandro Goncalves, Express Model was kept back off quick early fractions until upper stretch. Goncalves went to work, and the Indiana-bred filly surged to the front for a 1 1/2-length victory. Secondhand Justice, under Fernando De La Cruz, was second, a length in front of Tricia’s Trauma.

Express Model bested the field of Indiana-bred 2-year-old fillies in 1.11.96 over a fast track and returned $5.20.

Crown Ambassador: My Crafty Friend stays unbeaten

My Crafty Friend remained a perfect 2 for 2 after winning the $89,600 Crown Ambassador for trainer Scott Mullins. Jockey Alejandro Contreras kept the 2-year-old Indiana-bred to the outside of the pace before rallying in the stretch for a 1 1/4-length win.

Flashy Warrior was a late-closing second, and Jenry was a nose behind in third. Both seemed to be closing fast, but Contreras kept his cool.

“I know what kind of horse he is, so I was not worried at all,” he said. “He ran a great race last time, and I was sure he could get the job done today.”

The running time for the six furlongs over a fast track was 1.11.36, and My Crafty Friend returned $2.60 to win.
