A Diehl came from near last early to get up in the final strides to win the $100,000 J. Kenneth Self Shelby County Boys and Girls Club Stakes on Wednesday evening at Indiana Downs.
Jockey Marcelino Pedroza kept the Rusty Arnold trainee back and near the rail in the field of six through slow fractions of 25.14 and 49.12 seconds. Pedroza angled his charge off the rail to rally on the far turn. It then took the nearly entire length of the Indiana Downs stretch for A Diehl got up in the final jump and win by a half-length. Pacesetting Night Party was second, 2 1/4 lengths in front of third-place Final Count, who was coupled with A Diehl.
The running time for the mile over firm turf was 1:36.11. The entry returned $4 to win.
* In the other two one-mile turf stakes on the card, Ain't She a Saint came from far back in a field of 3-year-old Indiana-bred fillies to win the $84,000 Ellen's Lucky Star.
Trained by Jeff Greenhill, Ain't She a Saint was checked in the first turn and then steadily advanced towards contention under jockey Corey Lanerie. The final margin of victory was a length and a half.
Easter Dell was second, a nose in front of Angels Trace in third. Ain't She a Saint was timed in 1.38.80 and returned $8.60 to win.
* Sneakin Away did just that in the $84,000 The Snack when upsetting a field of nine Indiana-bred 3-year-olds.
Jockey Orlando Mojica kept Sneakin Away near the front of the pack until mid-stretch, then squirted clear and drew off to win by 8 1/2 lengths. He paid $58.60 to win.
Trained by Mike Lauer, Sneakin Away was timed in 1:36.48. Grand Coulee was second and Flashy Kid was third. The exacta returned $636.60
