Imaqtpie ($25.60) scores upset in Los Alamitos Winter Derby

Imaqtpie failed to qualify for three major Quarter Horse futurities at Los Alamitos last year. The closest she came to a big prize race was a sixth in the $30,000 Los Alamitos Two Million Juvenile, the consolation of the $1.9 million futurity in December.

Now, months later, Imaqtpie is in the front rank of the 3-year-old division at Los Alamitos. On Saturday, Imaqtpie won the $224,900 Los Alamitos Winter Derby in an 11-1 upset.

Ridden by Rodrigo Aceves, Imaqtpie closed well on the rail in the final 200 yards to win the 400-yard race by three-quarters of a length ahead of Jess Hawk, the fastest qualifier from the Jan. 21 trials.

The filly Kiddy Up Cowgirl finished third. One Proud Eagle, the 5-2 favorite, finished last of nine after a poor start.

Imaqtpie ($25.60) was timed in 19.67 seconds. She earned $94,458 for the Dutch Masters III partnership of James Streelman and Denny Boer, and trainer Jaime Gomez. Gomez bred Imaqtpie, who is by One Famous Eagle.

Imaqtpie, who was second to Jess Hawk in the time trials, was one of four fillies in the Winter Derby field. She has won 2 of 8 starts and has earned $105,358.

Imaqtpie will be pointed to the La Primera Del Ano Derby for 3-year-old fillies at Los Alamitos on April 1, Gomez said.
