Illinois Racing Board gets 2013 dates requests

CHICAGO – Track applications for 2013 racing dates filed with the Illinois Racing Board on Tuesday suggest the racing calendar next year in Illinois will closely resemble the one employed in 2012.

Arlington applied for 89 racing dates in 2013, with a meet starting April 22 and ending Sept. 30. That start date is earlier than what has become traditional on the Chicago racing calendar, with Arlington’s meet typically beginning just before the Kentucky Derby, which is schedule for May 4 next year. This year’s meet, lasting the 90 days that Arlington requested, began May 4, the day before the Kentucky Derby.

Hawthorne Race Course, which was granted 105 live dates in 2012, applied for 107 days in 2013. Hawthorne asked that their winter-spring meet begin Feb. 8 and run through May 4, Kentucky Derby Day, but has not hosted the Derby simulcast since 2005.

Hawthorne also has applied to retain its usual fall schedule, requesting a fall-winter meet running Oct. 1 through Dec. 31.

Fairmount Park in far southern Illinois made its typical blanket request for 150 days of racing sometime during the whole calendar year. A Fairmount meet far shorter than the number of requested days typically is worked out at the racing board’s annual racing dates hearing, which this year will be held Sept. 25.
