Iffraaj easy winner in Lennox

Iffraaj gave nothing else a chance in the Group 2, $279,000 Lennox Stakes on Tuesday, when he sped to a four-length victory in Glorious Goodwood's opening day feature.

Narrowly denied in Newmarket's July meeting, when he failed to run down Les Arcs in the Group 1 July Cup at six furlongs, the 3-2 Iffraaj was ridden more prominently in second place this time by Frankie Dettori. Iffraaj assumed command just inside the quarter pole and drew off to defeat 40-1 longshot Jedburgh. getting the seven furlongs in 1:25.58 on good ground. Trained by Saeed bin Suroor, Ifraaj was transferred from his previous owner, Ahmed Al Maktoum, to Godolphin after having won both the Wokingham Handicap and the Group 2 Park Stakes last year. If the Lennox is any indication, he appears capable of staying a mile in group race company.

On the same card, the 2-year-old filly Enticing won the Group 3 Molecomb Stakes at five furlongs. Off as the 3-1 favorite under Michael Hills, Enticing outdueled the colt Wi Dud by a head to remain undefeated after three starts. Her trainer, Bill Haggas, said that Enticing might take on older horses this year in the Prix de l'Abbaye de Longchamp, a race in which her dam, Superstar Leo, finished second in 2000.

* On Thursday at Goodwood, Yeats will take center stage in the Group 2 Goodwood Cup at two miles. Arguably the best stayer in the world, Yeats looked awesome last time out, when he returned from an eight-month layoff and won the 2 1/2-mile Ascot Gold Cup by four lengths. Michael Kinane replaces Kieren Fallon aboard Yeats, who will be tried once again by Reefscape, who finished second in the Gold Cup.
