Icicle Angel set to end cold streak

PORTLAND, Ore. - Icicle Angel attempts to pick up an overdue win when she takes on seven other fillies and mares in Sunday's featured 10th race at Portland Meadows, a 5 1/2-furlong allowance affair with a purse of $6,000.

Icicle Angel, a 5-year-old daughter of La Saboteur from the barn of owner and trainer Dick Occhiuto, is winless in 10 starts this year, but nine of those efforts came against extremely tough company at Emerald Downs. She was second three times in allowance company, finishing close behind Anazeha twice going six furlongs, then running second to Castle Mountain going 6 1/2 furlongs.

In her most recent outing, on Emerald's closing day Sept. 16, Icicle Angel ran fourth at 9-5 in a $50,000 claiming race at six furlongs. She has since posted two sharp local works, however, and seems certain to be favored Sunday under Marijo Terleski at 119 pounds.

Wegota Slewzy defeated Icicle Angel in Icicle Angel's lone start at this track last season, scoring by three lengths over that rival in a six-furlong allowance in February. Wegota Slewzy has not raced since that win, but will pose a threat if ready for her best effort off a layoff.

Another contender is Missy Muffet, a stakes winner here last fall at 3. This year she posted three straight front-running wins at Grants Pass before settling for second last time out in a stakes at Ferndale on Aug. 10.

* Adding spice to Sunday's 11-race card are a pair of Quarter Horse trials for the Evergreen Futurity, which will be run Nov. 3 at 400 yards. The trials each will have a field of nine.
