Hystericalady captures BC Oaks

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Last summer at Del Mar, jockey Patrick Valenzuela thought he had a stakes-winning mount with Hystericalady, an invader from northern California. It turns out he was off by about 10 months.

While Hystericalady finished a disappointing sixth under Valenzuela in the Sorrento Stakes at Del Mar last August, she easily won Sunday's $152,400 Hollywood Breeders' Cup Oaks at Hollywood Park.

Leading throughout, Hystericalady ($16.40) set early fractions of 23.73 and 47.10 seconds and won by 7 1-2 lengths in her first start around two turns.

"I think what was important, given the speed that she has, was how she was able to carry it," Valenzuela said.

Hystericalady finished 1 1-16 miles in 1:43.08, winning comfortably over the previously unbeaten Squallacious, the even-money favorite who was making her stakes debut. Downthedustyroad finished third in the field of seven 3-year-old fillies.

Hystericalady has won 4 of 6 starts and $159,065.

The Grade 2 Oaks is the most prestigious win for Hystericalady, who races for Rancho San Miguel, George Todaro and trainer Jerry Hollendorfer. She was a stakes winner at the Alameda County Fair in Pleasanton in July 2005.
