Hype closes to win Brooks Fields

Hype took advantage of the yielding turf Saturday, rallying from last at the half-mile pole for a half-length victory over Purse a Dream in the $35,000 Brooks Fields Stakes over about 7 1/2 furlongs at Canterbury Park. It was the third career victory - all of them on turf - for the Gary Scherer-trained 4-year-old.

The early fractions of 26.43 seconds and 1:17.08 set by Trying Brian figured to make it tough for the closers, but the soggy turf seemed to be the equalizer as the speedsters looked leg-weary in upper stretch.

Hype covered the distance in 1:35.18.

"I had a lot of horse" winning jockey Eddie Martin Jr. said. "I just cut to the inside and found some running room."

Hype returned $16.80 for the win. Pursue a Dream finished a neck ahead of Green Secret, who was 1 1/4 lengths ahead of Trying Brian.

Grizzled Robert disappointed as the favorite, finishing sixth of seven and showing little during the race.
