Husbands scores aboard Marchfield, Ginger Brew

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Jockey Patrick Husbands swept both Woodbine stakes on Sunday, winning the Grade 2 Autumn on Marchfield and the $150,000 Jammed Lovely aboard Ginger Brew.

Marchfield ($11.40) commenced a three-wide rally from last at the three-eighths pole, and awaited room early in the stretch before surging late to prevail by a half-length over 10-1 shot Stunning Stag. Pacemaker Ice Bear, the 3-1 favorite, finished another neck back in third in the nine-horse field.

“He’s been really sharp,” said Mark Casse, who trains Marchfield. “I thought he got into a good position, and I knew he had some run in him, but I didn’t think he was going to get an opening. I thought he was going to be second or third, but he got clear.”

Marchfield, the 2007 Breeders’ Stakes winner, covered the distance in 1:43.28. He earned $99,000 of the $165,250 purse for Melnyk Racing Stable.

Ginger Brew ($2.90) probably locked up the Sovereign Award for Canadian champion 3-year-old filly in the Jammed Lovely.

Ginger Brew set a moderate pace in the seven-furlong event, and repelled a bid from Authenicat in the stretch en route to a 4 1/4-length score, in a time of 1:21.75.

Brian Lynch trains Ginger Brew, who banked $90,000 for Stronach Stable.

“Nobody wanted the lead when we left the gate,” said Husbands. “I left her alone, and kept her on the outside. She ran a good race, and showed that she’s the class of the field.”
