Hurricane Alan defends title

Hurricane Alan defended his Group 2 Sandown Mile title in style, while Weightless returned to his best form to steal the Group 3 Gordon Richards Stakes at Sandown Park on Saturday.

Running off just 10 days' rest, the 5-1 Hurricane Alan outgamed the gallant Brunel up the half-mile Sandown stretch to record a half-length victory for trainer Richard Hannon, traveling the mile in 1:43.68 on good to soft ground. Norse Dancer, the 2-1 favorite, was one-paced up the hill in finishing fifth, but that takes nothing away from the winner, who overcame a quarter crack earlier in the week and will seek Group 1 laurels in the one-mile Lockinge Stakes at Newbury on May 14.

Weightless, the winner of the Group 2 Prix Dollar and the Group 3 Prix du Prince d'Orange in 2003 when trained in France by Pascal Bary, was making his first start for Amanda Perrett since having been bought at auction from Khalid Abdullah last fall for just $72,000. His usual front-running style brought him a handy 3 1/2-length victory over Hazyview at the healthy price of 14-1. Weightless's time for the 1 1/4 miles was 2:08.90.
