Humoristic snaps losing streak in Violet

EmailEAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - Trainer Hamilton Smith had plenty to celebrate Friday night at the Meadowlands as Humoristic ended a 13-race losing streak with a one-length upset in the Grade 3, $150,000 Violet Stakes for fillies and mares on the turf.

It was the first win for the 6-year-old Humoristic since the 2005 Violet, and came as the mare winds down her career.

"She always ran good up there at night," Smith said. "We're looking at maybe one more start. Or maybe not, and that's it. We'll make a decision in the next week or so, but she came out of the race good."

With Rajiv Maragh aboard, Humoristic ($31.80) tracked the pacesetting Pommes Frites before sweeping past with a three-wide surge in the lane.

"I had a lot of horse and I was just waiting to make the right-time move," Maragh said.

The time was 1:41.23 for the 1 1/16 miles on a firm course.

Pommes Frites drifted into the path of 3-5 favorite Roshani, who was forced to steady inside the sixteenth pole. Pommes Frites was disqualified from second to third while Roshani was elevated to the place spot.
