Hudson: Well Fancied gets up


Well Fancied squeezed through a narrow opening along the rail in midstretch and drew clear for a one-length victory over Tom's Thunder in the $125,000 Hudson Handicap at six furlongs. Vodka finished third, three-quarters of a length ahead of Say Florida Sandy.

The win gave Well Fancied a sweep of the New York-bred sprint stakes at this meet. On opening day, he won the General Douglas MacArthur Handicap.

Well Fancied broke well under Velazquez and stalked the leaders through fractions of 22.08 seconds and 45.24. Well Fancied was caught behind horses around the turn, dove to the inside in upper stretch, and brushed with Smokieisabandit while getting through inside the eighth pole. Well Fancied, a 4-year-old gelded son of Prosper Fager, covered the six furlongs in 1:09.82. Well Fancied is owned by Sanford Goldfarb, Jonathan Flesig and Stewart Hoffman.

Sent off the 6-5 favorite, Well Fancied returned $4.70 to win.
