Howard, of Woodbine, dead

J.F. "Jake" Howard, the former chairman of the board of the Woodbine Entertainment Group who died Saturday at age 81, will be remembered in a service at Woodbine on Thursday, June 23. The memorial will be from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. in the track's Northern Dancer Room.

Howard, who died at home following a lengthy battle with cancer, was a member of the board of trustees of the Woodbine Entertainment Group from the mid-1980's and served as chairman of its board of directors from 1999 through 2001. Most recently, he was honorary chairman.

Howard also was an avid owner of both Thoroughbreds and Standardbreds since 1970. Some of Howard's better Thoroughbred runners included stakes winners Millashand and Mordacious, both trained by his son, Ian.

Questuary, bred and co-owned by Jake Howard and trained by Ian Howard, is a candidate for Sunday's $500,000 Woodbine Oaks.

Howard's survivors also include his wife of 55 years, Nancy.
