How to bet Santa Anita's guaranteed $750K Pick 4 - April 7, 2012

Here's my race-by-race rundown of the guaranteed $750,000 Saturday pick four at Santa Anita Park. I'm building my wager with TicketMaker, found exclusively on DRF.com.

Race 8 (The Providencia)

LADY OF SHAMROCK’s (#1) last 3 grass races have been monstrous. They experimented with dirt in the Grade 3 Santa Ysabel Jan. 28 and she didn’t run badly but it wasn’t the same. Back to turf in the China Doll March 10 she showed this is her game. BYRAMA (#4) continues to improve and when she was 3rd to ‘SHAMROCK in the Blue Norther Dec. 30 she had ample trouble. CHARM THE MAKER (#5) hasn’t fared too well on dirt in her last 2 but may love the sod as she’s by a strong grass sire (Empire Maker) and out of a Grade 3 turf  winner (Charm the Giant).

Race 9 (The Potrero Grande)

AMAZOMBIE (#2), last year’s champion sprinter, didn’t run badly in his first start of 2012 when 3rd in the Grade 2 San Carlos. He can improve and should get an ample pace at which to run. SWAY AWAY (#1) blasted home to give The Factor a big scare when 2nd to him in the Grade 2 San Carlos. Considering that was his first start in over 8 months he may well move forward. ROMAN THREAT (#5) made quite a splash in his debut here March 11, powering home to win easily for a heady 106 Beyer. Baffert throws him right into the deep end but based on that debut he may fit here despite his lack of seasoning.

Race 10 (The American Beauty)

BELLE ROYALE (#4) invades from England where she did plenty of good work including winning her last 3. She gets the meet’s leading rider (Rosario) and has worked in solid fashion for her first U.S. try. GO FORTH NORTH (#9) was knocking on the door to big things last year with a Grade 3 win and a number of graded stakes placings. GEM OF SOUL (#8) was most impressive in her U.S. debut here March 8 as the Brazilian, who won 2 of 3 down there, pressed the pace, took over and drew off for the easy win. CALLE VISTA (#2) makes her first start in almost a year. She’s fired fresh before and the fact Mandella picks a tough spot like this for her first start back encourages.

Race 11 (Maiden claiming race)

SWISS GAME (#5) ended up dueling in the slop here March 17 and paid the price. That was his first start in 3 months so he figures fitter, and should enjoy dry land and a return to stalking tactics. MIDNIGHT CON (#1) is the one to beat with four 2nds in his last 5 starts. He figures to get a good trip stalking the pace. GALITZIANER (#8) was no factor in his debut here Jan. 28 but not only was it his debut but it came vs. straight maidens and on turf. He’s been freshened, worked well and takes a big drop and trainer Kruljac has been strong with this class move (3 for last 6, 50 percent). TALE BE TOLD (#10) has been knocking on the door for a while and figures to break through one of these days.
