How to bet Gulfstream Park's Saturday Pick 5 - Feb. 18, 2012

Here's my race-by-race rundown of Saturday's pick five at Gulfstream Park on Feb. 18, 2012. I'm building my wager with TicketMaker, found exclusively on DRF.com. Keep in mind that the total cost for this play is likely to drop, given the inclusion of several also eligibles (AE) as "A" plays.

Race 7 ($29,500 claiming race)

The sub-par effort in that 12-furlong AN1X last time is a race that's easily overlooked for SAINT JUDE (#9), who should appreciate the more reasonable distance, the class drop, and the anticipated quick pace. LEIPZIG (#11) is easy to like after missing by a head in a similar situation last time, and the expected race flow makes a "bounce" in his 2nd start off the layoff less likely.

Race 8 ($51,500 maiden special weight)

WINDSURFER (#9) looks tough off that last try, where he weakened late despite making what seemed to be a winning move in the lane. Some will view that as a negative but the slow start didn't help, and he was also behind a sharp winner there, with a big gap back to the show. He's the lone "A" play in this race, but lesser tickets will also use Pushingonastring, Buckey Road, Monarchic and Grouse as insurance.

Race 9 ($53,500 allowance race)

The West Point Thoroughbreds entry of KANAGARO (#1) and GRIP HANDS (#1A) looms large in the 9th, as their figures fit well, and the running styles suit well, with the former primarily a stalker and the latter an expected frontrunner. CORPORATE JUNGLE (#10) is the one to beat, thanks to the fact that he has that 90 Beyer, earned two back, in his back pocket. Positive Side and Round Trip Loner are Tampa shippers who will be included on backup tickets, as will Za Approval, who earned a competitive figure in that maiden score in September.

Race 10 (Grade 2, $150,000 Gulfstream Park Sprint Championship)

CAPT. CANDYMAN CAN (#2) is only a half-length away from a perfect record at this seven-furlong distance, and though he's been away for a few months he's posted some of the best figures of his career off short rests like this one. FORCE FREEZE (#8) is of course the one to beat, coming off that game, narrow loss in the Breeders' Cup. He's clearly going to be a handful, and he's not going to be left off many Pick 5 tickets at all, but this is the first time he's trying a distance any longer than six furlongs, and he may face some pressure. If there is in fact a duel, Bold Warrior could fall into a nice trip from the rail, and he warrants inclusion on secondary tickets.

Race 11 ($25,000 maiden claiming race)

The strength of this race largely resides on the AE list, which makes it even more difficult than usual to construct a ticket well in advance. If MICHAEL'S ABBY (#13), RHONIN VICTORIA (#15) and/or DELTA LADY (#16) get in they're fillies you almost have to use on all tickets, but others that entice are REBEL GREY (#7), STARSHIP GAMBLER (#8) and MISS SPRIGHTLY (#12). This is a deep field, though, so I'll also include Mystic Beach, Cheer N Shout and Mistie Royale.

My wagers

With TicketMaker I'm able to put greater emphasis on my "A" selections while still having coverage with my "B" and "C" picks just in case. This allows me to maximize my budget for this pick five.
