Houghton rides 4,000th winner

Jockey Terry Houghton notched his 4,000th career victory on Sunday when he guided Kaos Kid to a front-running win over maiden claiming foes in the first race at Canterbury Park. Houghton, 37, has spent the summer at Canterbury Park after riding earlier this year at Hawthorne and Indiana Downs.

Houghton is one of seven riders banned from Tampa Bay Downs last year following an ongoing investigation into alleged race-fixing, and he is currently banned from riding at Arlington Park. After submitting the results of a polygraph test and other testimony that he provided to the FBI and Thoroughbred Racing Protective Bureau, Houghton was allowed to ride at Canterbury Park

Houghton's career began at Detroit Race Course in 1987 while Houghton attended high school in his native Michigan, and during his career he has captured riding titles at Tampa and Great Lakes Downs. Houghton has overcome several significant injuries during his career, including an episode of brain trauma suffered as a result of a fall in a race at Great Lakes in 2002.

Houghton is the 52nd rider to reach the 4,000-win milestone in North America.
