LUTYENS was blocked on the bend of his most recent start, then was stuck behind a wall of horses turning for home. He split horses with a strong late rally to finish ahead of a pair of next-out winners, and should get a favorable pace scenario on Wednesday. The $1.6M yearling has been a terrible disappointment for connections and bettors alike (beaten favorite in last three starts), but actually showed some life at Del Mar, and meets no future champions here. One last chance.
CHEROKEE TEAR makes first start for a tag after a pair of dull efforts at Del Mar. Perhaps the $300,000 juvenile purchase disliked that polytrack, but he failed to switch leads when a runner-up at Hollywood on June 10, and subsequently lost as the favorite on July 6. He should improve with the class drop, but he may not be as good as his back Beyers indicate. CAPI AND MAX has good early speed, and seems to be rounding into form after a runner-up effort at Fairplex. He should be on or near the lead in this spot, but has yet to gain ground from the stretch call to the wire, and will now tack on an additional furlong in distance.
DEVON INTERVENTION has some angles in his favor as he removes the blinkers for his second start following a long, long layoff. His Del Mar run wasn't bad at all considering the time off, and the gray colt shouldn't be ignored in this spot.
