Horse of the day for 7/19

Del Mar - Race 4
5 1/2 Furlongs (Polytrack)
Maiden Claiming ($100,000-$85,000)
2-year-old fillies
Purse $44,000.

CUPID'S KITTY only sold for $8,000 as a yearling, but after she worked one furlong in 10.40 at Barretts in March, she was purchased for $65,000 (that's thirteen times the stud fee of sire Gulf Storm). She shows a sharp half-mile drill over this surface (second-fastest of fifty-two at the distance), and the June 9 gate work at Santa Anita matches up with trainer Ted West's juvenile colt Nene (won debut at Hollywood on June 22 for a $62,500 tag with a 77 Beyer). West has sent out a pair of debut winners this year in maiden claiming races, and his filly looks live on Thursday.
HI LILY HI LO adds blinkers, and she has the valuable experience and bottom edge over her rivals with four starts on her record. Trainer Mike Harrington has a solid winning percentage with horses adding blinkers, and Hi Lily Hi Lo is a full-sister to stakes-winning sprinter Tyrolean Empress (21-2-5-0, $91,700), and multiple stakes-placed performer Yes Talk to Me (18-3-6-1, $60,312, all wins sprinting). She should show good speed in this spot, and will be prominent when they turn for home. RUNFORTHEMONEYBABY is bred both sides for grass, but we've seen horses with turf pedigree perform admirably on synthetic surfaces in the past. The full sister to Grade 3-placed juvenile turfer Spenditallbaby (13-3-3-2, $202,550) shows steady works, and should offer value. QUEEN HOLLY took money for her career debut, and received a rude awakening when off poorly. She rallied nicely in the lane, should move forward with that race under her belt, and is bred to appreciate the added distance. She's a half to the multiple Grade 3 turf winner Clearly a Queen (28-9-4-6, $504,532), and trainer Vladimir Cerin is having an excellent year. Queen Holly wouldn't be a surprise if she breaks cleanly this time.
LA MINA adds blinkers for the powerful Mitchell barn after facing a quality maiden special weight group in her debut. The 1-2 finishers that day returned to finish third and first in the Landaluce Stakes at Hollywood.
