Horse of the day for 7/18

Del Mar - Race 3
5 1/2 Furlongs (Polytrack)
Maiden Special Weight
Purse $53,000.

CORONAS AT DELMAR showed good speed in his career debut, but he was caught in a bit tight on the rail entering the turn, and was pocketed turning for home. He seemed to tire in the late stages, but the recent six-furlong workouts may give him the needed foundation to last this time around. He should be prominent from the get-go, and it usually pays to have experience and bottom over deeper synthetic surfaces.
GOOD MAN DAN looms the one to beat after chasing subsequent Hollywood Juvenile Championship runner-up Leonides on June 16. Two other runners came back to place from that maiden event, and Good Man Dan's most recent Beyer Speed Figure must be respected. A half to Group 2 juvenile winner Howick Falls (on grass), he is bred to be precocious, and wouldn't be a surprise. MANY RIVERS is a half-brother to multiple Grade 1 winner Harlan's Holiday so it's a bit of a surprise that this son of Storm Cat only sold for 100 grand in March. He didn't do much in his debut, but can come running late if a speed duel develops up front. MAIMONEDES, a half to three graded winners including Grade 1 heroes El Corredor and Roman Ruler, cost $4.6M at auction, and hails from the dangerous Bob Baffert barn. He was rumored to be scratched from this race, however, and would be undervalued if he does start.
COAST GUARD worked a bullet half-mile over this surface on July 15, and has gotten some press leading up to his debut. The sire gets plenty of debut winners, but the bottom side of the family favors turf.
