Horse of the day for 6/28

Hollywood Park - Race 8
6 Furlongs (Cushion Track)
Maiden Claiming ($25,000-$22,500)
3-year-olds and upward
Purse $15,000.

Usually don't like to play 5-year-old maidens with 19 previous defeats on the record, but SENIOR DISCOUNT makes the important third start of the form cycle with improving Beyers on display. The half to stakes-placed sprinter Little Itch ran some competitive speed figures last year, and catches a fairly weak field on Thursday. He has virtually no early speed, but there should be enough pace for him to run at when it counts. He raced against the grain of a speed-favoring Del Mar track when putting up an 81 Beyer on July 20, 2006, and a repeat of that race would have him right there at the wire.
HAVE A TIZZY should benefit from his most recent effort when returning from a four month break, and he should be among the pacesetters in this spot. His last two sprint speed figures make him a good fit here, but he has never gained ground from the stretch call to the wire. LUTYENS cost $1.6M as a yearling, and is now a 6-year-old with only three starts to his name. The full brother to multiple Grade 3 winner Jazz Club (22-8-2-2, $417,679) has been plagued by layoff lines throughout his career, and must deal with the far outside post for his first start since March 31, 2006. He fits on speed figures, but there are still plenty of questions to answer about his physical status. MARIN COUNTY was the beaten favorite in the faster division of $25K maiden claimers on June 8, and he was stuck in an outside post position that day. He seems to have some tactical speed, but is another that has yet to showcase a strong stretch kick.
MANDATE TO FLY didn't have the easiest of trips in career debut when off a bit slowly, He now drops in class, and should be running late for underrated trainer/jockey combination. BRITE MIRAGE easily outran his 24-1 odds in career debut, and he didn't have the cleanest break that day. He was making up late ground, and shows some consistent workouts for red-hot barn. JAKEDONTKNOW is a son of multiple stakes-placed performer In Excelcis Deo (11-4-0-4, $85,632), and he broke poorly in his debut. He shows a bullet workout for this outing, and you have to respect the Mullins barn.
