Horse of the day for 5/24

Churchill Downs - Race 7
1 Mile
Maiden Special Weight
3-year-olds and upward
Purse $48,000

PAST THE POINT is a half-brother to multiple stakes-placed A Bit of Pressure (16-4-3-6, $168,077), and he should have gained valuable experience from his career debut. He broke well, but was outsprinted into the pocket position, and raced behind the leader turning for home. Past the Point angled three wide in upper stretch, and rallied mildly along the inside in the lane. This trainer/jockey combination won a graded race at Woodbine last weekend, and their charge may work out a good inside-out trip while stalking the speeds.
THORN SONG looms the one to beat, but is stuck on the also-eligible list. The $200,000 yearling raced four wide in a key race at Gulfstream two back, and galloped out past the winner (Chucker came back to win a N1X allowance at Gulfstream with a 92 Beyer). He's burned a lot of money in two of his last three starts, however. TRIPLE NINE FIVE adds blinkers, and he should show good early speed as he stretches out in distance. He's the first foal from Grade 3-placed turfer Amaretta (14-3-1-0, $116,480) so the extra yardage shouldn't prove a problem. DR GOOGLES BOOGLES tackled stakes horses Street Musician and Most Distinguished at Gulfstream, and then finished ahead of next-out Churchill Downs maiden graduate Betterincludeme (84 Beyer) on March 31. His good stalking speed is a big asset, and he's bred to be a solid performer (dam was multiple stakes-placed sprinter that has already thrown a stakes-placed runner).
RHAPSODYBOHEMIAN has spent his entire career either training or racing on synthetic surfaces so it will be interesting to see how he handles conventional dirt. He just missed in the faster division of maiden special weights at Keeneland last year (featured future stakes runners Zanjero, Rutledge Cat, Grapelli), but failed to ride the closer's bias in his most recent start, and must deal with a long layoff.
