Keeneland - Race 1
6 1/2 Furlongs (Polytrack)
Maiden Special Weight
3-year-olds
Purse $50,000.

Menifee has sired three debut winners in 2007, and BROGUE seems primed to make it number four. The dam is a half-sister to multiple stakes-winner French Braids (34-9-3-6, $607,685, won debut), and there is plenty of class in the female family. Brogue shows a bullet workout over the deep dirt track at Payson Park on March 25, and the April 3 drill matches up with trainer Christophe Clement's Saint Stephen (7yo veteran with 103 Beyer top). Brogue must avoid a wide trip from the far outside post, but picks up a leading rider in Garrett Gomez (Clement/Gomez combo is 6-13, 46%, $3.68 ROI over the last five years at Keeneland).
RIVER WIDE is a three-quarter brother to multiple stakes-winner Gold Dollar (45-6-4-10, $425,380), and the dam was a sprint stakes-winner (26-5-4-6, $167,546). His broodmare sire is the dam sire of a pair of debut winners in 2007. ROYAL ORLEANS shows a quick gate work (58.60) over Polytrack, and he is a full brother to the very fast Chapel Royal (8-3-2-1, $495,571, won debut, Grade 2 sprint winner). Expect good gate speed from this one. MANHASSET INDIAN disappointed as a "Horse of the Day" selection on April 11, but perhaps he needed that race - his first of the year. He has tactical speed, and may attempt an inside-out, pace-tracking trip under Leparoux. THREE TWENTY THREE ran well despite being "five wide into turn," and figures to be on or near the lead in this spot. STOUTHEARTED makes the turf to dirt move after attempting a premature midrace move at Gulfstream. Looms an intriguing exotics candidate.
JEDOUM is the first foal out of multiple Grade 1 winner Habibti, and he had the misfortune to tackle Nobiz Like Shobiz at Belmont last fall. He'll be moving late, but may be overbet in his first start of the year.
