JOYFUL ACRES was saddled with tough outside post positions when spotted ambitiously against winners for her last two races. She was hardly disgraced in those outings, and should appreciate dropping back in with maidens on Wednesday. She has decent tactical speed, and may work out a nice stalking trip behind probable pacesetters EUROPIUM and SWEET SMILE. Joyful Acres missed by a neck in her only turf start against maidens to date, and seems like a nice fit at this level.
SWEET SMILE has yet to run to her pedigree. A daughter of top sire El Prado and Grade 2-placed Blushing Deed, she takes a big drop in class for master horseman Bill Mott, and will make the important third start of the form cycle. Those are some powerful angles in her corner, and she should respond with an improved effort from close to the pace. Europium showed improved speed in her turf debut, and figures to be contesting the fractions once again in this spot. She drifted out badly in the late stages of the most recent race, however, and has yet to gain ground from the stretch call to the wire. She may need to show better stamina in order to win this.
TIA DIA raced in and among horses for the majority of her race on January 25, then rallied from far back last time out. She doesn't have much speed, and may need a quick pace to setup her stretch kick. SMOOTH BREW disappointed as the favorite in her last two races, but gets a rider switch to John Velazquez, and trainer Peter Walder is having his usual good meet. Smooth Brew should do better in her second start with blinkers.
