Hoosier: Spanabel takes top honors


Kelly Spanabel collected a pair of wins Saturday night to capture top honors over 10 other competitors in Hoosier Park's fifth annual Female Jockey Challenge before a crowd of more than 3,200.

The six-race competition featured 11 female riders. Spanabel won the second leg of the series aboard Schmoopy Hang On ($9.60), then guided Survita ($12.80) to victory in the fourth leg. Janice Blake, who opened the competition with a win aboard Kasey My Girl ($6), finished second, and locally based apprentice Jaleina Farrell had a win aboard Peak in Time ($8) to finish third in the competition. Lori Wydick was scheduled to ride in the series but was unable to participate.
