Hoosier Park: Zanjero impressive

EmailLast early in the Grade 2, $510,600 Indiana Derby at Hoosier Park, Zanjero steadily advanced up the rail under jockey Robby Albarado and was fifth at the top of the stretch. Steered off the rail by Albarado for running room, Zanjero easily put away pacesetting Flashstorm with a furlong to go and drew off to win by 3 1/2 lengths over Bwana Bull. Flashstorm was third, 2 3/4 lengths behind.

Zanjero, trained by Steve Asmussen, paid $5.40 as the favorite and covered the 1 1/16 miles in 1:43.95 over a fast track.

* In the $104,050 Schaefer Mile, a ground-saving ride by jockey Calvin Borel helped propel longshot Casino Evil to victory by a length, with Simon Pure besting Unbridled Behavior for second by three-quarters of a length. Wiggins, the 2-1 favorite, raced wide and finish sixth.

Casino Evil ($35.60), trained by Mike Tomlinson, covered a mile in 1:37.40.
