Grace Hall made it look easy winning the Grade 2, $200,000 Indiana Oaks on Saturday afternoon at Hoosier Park.
Trained by Anthony Dutrow and ridden by Brian Hernandez Jr., Grace Hall was to the outside of pacesetting Eden’s Moon, trained by Bob Baffert, to the far turn in the 1 1/16-mile event. Hernandez asked Grace Hall for run into the stretch, and she responded, drawing off to win by 5 3/4 lengths.
Hernandez was impressed with his mount.
“I was just a passenger, she did it all on her own and very effortlessly,” he said. “She got away from the gate good and put herself to the outside of Baffert’s filly in a perfect spot.”
Hernandez did go to the whip once in midstretch.
“I felt kind of bad, I used the whip once to make sure her mind was on business, and she took off again,” Hernandez said. “She is some kind of filly.”
Wine Princess was second, and pacesetting Eden’s Moon faded to third.
Grace Hall returned $3.80 to win and ran the 1 1/16 miles over a good track in 1.41.85.
Best Bets
HALDANE has had some excuses during five race losing streak since winning back-to-back last summer, including a ridiculous ride being throttled down behind a walking pace when defeated as the favorite over this trip last month; gets a rider change for this, and is eligible to rebound at a better price. ANOTHER PAGE has won both starts over this distance, and done so closing down loose pace-setters each time with determined stretch runs; should have more pace to close into this time with others doing the dirty work for her.
