Hoosier Park: Favored Mack the Slew takes Hillsdale


ANDERSON, Ind. - Mack the Slew was kept down on the inside behind the dueling leaders by Jockey Terry Thompson in the $88,000 Hillsdale at Hoosier Park Saturday afternoon. Thompson angled the 2-year-old Indiana-bred colt to the outside in midstretch and he drew clear to win by 1 3/4 lengths.

Trained by Tom Proctor, Mack the Slew is now a perfect 2-for-2 lifetime. Stablemate’s Artie’s Love and Prince of Time finished second and third after dueling in the stretch and Flashy Kid rounded out the superfecta..

Mack the Slew returned $3 to win as the favorite and ran the 5 1/2 furlongs over muddy going in 1.05.00.

* Saint D’aroak upset a field of 2-year-old Indiana-bred fillies in the City of Anderson two races later. Jockey Rodney Prescott kept his mount just off and to the outside of the quick pacesetters. Saint D’araok drew off in upper stretch and held a three-length margin at the wire.

Yeardley was second and Explodent Moonshine was third. Yeardley and Slacker, the 1-5 favorites, both had trouble at the start and then Slacker bore out entering the turn and forced Yeardley to take up.Slacker finished eighth.

The running time for the 5 1/2 furlongs was 1.06.80 over a muddy track. The Randy Klop-trained Saint D’aroak returned $17.80 to win.
