Hoosier: 'Ellens' back for third time

Email

Ellens Lucky Star goes after her second straight stakes win when she headlines a field of 11 Indiana-bred fillies and mares in the $40,000 Merrillville Stakes at Hoosier Park.

The winner of this six-furlong race in 2003 and third last year, Ellens Lucky Star has consistently been in the money this season but had not won until the Richmond Stakes on Sept. 30. Hoosier's seven-furlong oval has been the scene of her biggest efforts and she sports a lifetime mark of 6-2-2 from 10 starts over the surface.

Ellens Lucky Star figures to run from off the pace when she breaks from post 10 with Orlando Mojica.

My Sweet Sug, trained by Brian Waltz, was the runner-up in last year's Merrillville and defeated Ellens Lucky Star in the Florence Henderson Stakes over the Indiana Downs turf last spring. Lori Wydick has the call from post 5.

Trainer Scott Lake will send out Lady Blue Sky, who returns to sprinting after a runner-up effort to Ellens Lucky Star in the Richmond. Lady Blue Sky was sent off as the favorite in the Richmond but could not cut the margin through the final furlong of the 1 1/16-mile race. Inosencio Diego has the ride from post 8.

Lady Blue Sky was claimed out of a win for $12,000 by Lake at Delaware Park this summer. Since coming to Lake's barn, she has a second and then a win against entry-level allowance company.
