Hong Kong: Convincible tries to extend streak

Email

The 6-year-old gelding Convincible is on a three-race winning streak since late May. Wednesday, Convincible starts for the second time in the new Hong Kong season in the $237,961 Cha Kwo Ling Handicap at six furlongs on turf at Happy Valley Racecourse.

Conditions should work in favor of Convincible. The three recent wins have all been at six furlongs on turf at Happy Valley. In each race, Convincible has been favored.

One significant difference is Convincible’s ascension in class. When the winning streak began, Convincible was rated at 75 and competing in class 3 races. After winning a class 3 race in May, Convincible won class 2 races in June and on Sept. 6 while rising in the ratings.

Wednesday’s race is restricted to horses rated 80 to 105. Convincible is rated at 96. The higher the rating, the more weight a horse carries in handicaps in Hong Kong. Blocker Dee, rated at 97, will carry topweight of 133 pounds. Convincible, and Sea Jade, will carry one pound less, with ratings of 96.

Trained by Francis Lui Kin-wai, Convincible has won 5 of 22 starts in his career, with the first two wins in Australia. Convincible was winless in his first 10 races in Hong Kong before the start of the winning streak. In each recent win, Convincible has rallied from off the pace to win by at least a neck under jockey Karis Teetan, who has the mount on Wednesday.

The Cha Kwo Ling Handicap is the last of eight races at Happy Valley on a program that begins at 7:15 a.m., Eastern. Post time for the Cha Kwo Ling Handicap is 10:50 a.m. Wagering is available on DRFBets.com.

The Cha Kwo Ling Handicap drew a field of 12, with one reserve – the recent class 3 race winner Perpetual Treasure.

Sea Jade, a five-time winner in the 2016-17 Hong Kong season, which ended in July, is a danger in his first start since May. Sea Jade tends to race closer to the front.

Wednesday’s race will be the third start of the month for Almababy, who was ninth at Sha Tin Racecourse on Sept. 3 after setting the pace, but a troubled second behind Convincible at Happy Valley on Sept. 6.

Perpetual Joyance was sixth behind Convincible in the Sept. 6. He had a troubled trip that day and could be a factor in this race with a better run under leading jockey Joao Moreira.
