Crabcakes had finished second in three of her four most recent outings coming into the $75,000 Miss Disco Stakes at Laurel Park on Saturday, but she proved she's more than a bridesmaid by pulling away in the stretch to win by 1 1/4 lengths. Crabcakes was bred and owned by the Buckingham Farm of Elizabeth "Binnie" Houghton, who died on Aug. 7 at age 79. Crabcakes is trained by her nephew, Bernie Houghton. Binnie Houghton and her husband Eddie, who died in 2008, operated Buckingham Farm on the eastern shore of Maryland since 1964. They bred over 40 stakes winners and raced many good horses, including multiple graded stakes winner Castelets; Palliser Bay, winner of the Grade 3 Gallorette; and He Loves Me, the Maryland-bred champion 3-year-old filly of 2004 and winner of the Grade 3 Iowa Oaks. "My aunt is up in heaven right now and we did it for her today," Bernie Houghton said after the race. "She had a lot of great horses." Crabcakes moved up to stalk the early pacesetters, Troublesome and Hailey's Flip. She took command of the race outside Hailey's Flip in upper stretch and drew off under jockey Forest Boyce. "It just worked out perfect," Boyce said. "It means a lot because I rode my first stakes winner when I had the bug for Bernie." Crabcakes, a daughter of Great Notion, blazed six furlongs over a fast track in 1:08.77. She paid $6.60 as the 2-1 second choice in the eight-horse field of Maryland-bred or -sired 3-year-old fillies. The Miss Disco is her second stakes win. She won the Maryland Juvenile Filly Championship at Laurel last December. Hailey's Flip finished second, seven lengths in front of third-place Faze the Nation, who rallied wide from off the pace. Ascertain, the 3-2 favorite, raced in early contention along the inside but tired to finish seventh. All Brandy: Bawlmer Hon gets perfect trip Bawlmer Hon had finished off the board in the only turf start of her 19-race career. But she handled the soft going in the All Brandy Stakes as well as anyone, and benefited from a perfect ride by Sheldon Russell to score a two-length upset in the 1 1/8-mile race for Maryland-bred or -sired fillies and mares. Bawlmer Hon tracked pacesetting stretch-out sprinter Daylight Ahead early. She took the lead on the far turn, drew well clear, and wasn't threatened thereafter. Nickyrocksforpops, who raced in third position early in the seven-horse field, finished second, 7 1/4 lengths in front of Look Who's Talking in third. "She put me in a great spot going into the first turn," Russell said. Bawlmer Hon, who is trained by Mark Shuman, paid $21.40 to win. She was timed in 1:58.04. The win was Shuman's first in a stakes since Spotted Heart won the Maryland Juvenile Filly Championship at Laurel in December 2014. Shuman, who is based at Fair Hill, said after the race that he regularly trains Bawlmer Hon over the turf there. "She's been super since she was a young horse," Shuman said. "You just have to get her into her stride and not take her back and take advantage of her speed." Bawlmer Hon, 4, is now 5 for 20 in her career. The All Brandy is her first stakes victory. She races for Runaway Point Farms. Find: Just Howard wins second-straight stakes It took Just Howard six starts to win a maiden race but he hasn’t lost since, and on Saturday he scored his second straight stakes victory in the Find, a 1 1/8-mile turf race for Maryland-bred or -sired runners. With Alex Cintron aboard, Just Howard attended the early pace outside 8-5 favorite English Minister. On the backstretch of the 1 1/8-mile race, which was conducted over soft turf, Cintron allowed Just Howard to settle off the leader, while Dothat Dance moved up outside horses to take second position. Cintron took Just Howard well out in the course for the stretch run and he wore down the two front-runners to score by a neck. Ghost Bay closed from well out in the course to finish second, three-quarters of a length ahead of Dothat Dance. It was another 1 1/4 lengths back to English Minister in fourth. Talk Show Man, the 5-2 second choice, finished fifth in the eight-horse field, a nose behind English Minister. Talk Show Man raced along the inside practically the entire race. "The inside is really wet," Cintron said. "I wanted to move out to the better part of the track, and when I did he just kept going." Just Howard, who is trained by Graham Motion, was beating older rivals for the second time in his career. He paid $13.20 and was timed in 1:57.10. Just Howard, who races for Skeedattle Associates, is a 3-year-old son of English Channel. In his prior start he defeated his own age group in the Caveat, a Maryland-bred stakes at 1 1/16 miles on turf.
