INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Retired trainer Mel Stute remained hospitalized early Tuesday after striking his head in a fall at his home last Saturday.
Stute was taken out of intensive care Monday and is expected to be hospitalized until the end of the week, according to his son, trainer Gary Stute.
“He doesn’t want to be in the hospital,” Gary Stute said. “They’ll keep him for a couple of more days.”
Mel Stute is best known as the trainer of Snow Chief, the champion 3-year-old colt of 1986.
Hey Hoolywood, want to make a great movie? Make one about Mel Stute's life. One of the greatest characrers ever in the horseracing game. Love you Mel, get well soon.

Runner-up in the Santa Anita Oaks, IOTAPA drops in class and shortens to a sprint with sharp recent works on the BHP surface. Oaks winner Beholder returned to finish second in the Kentucky Oaks; Oaks third Fiftyshadesofhay was one of the favorites Friday in the Black Eyed Susan at Pimlico. The point is, IOTAPA faced a good bunch last out. She specifically targeted this race, gets pace to run at, loves the track, and can mow them down as the favorite. She must catch two good front-runners.
