Hollywood Showbiz has experience edge

The region's first significant 2-year-old event, the $120,000 Copper Top Futurity, is slated for Saturday at Sunland Park. A field of 10 juveniles who qualified March 31 will dash 4 1/2 furlongs in the afternoon's 11th race.

The fastest qualifier is Hollywood Showbiz, who is trained by Alberto Amparan. The Gone Hollywood colt drew off as much the best in his heat, cruising home by five lengths. That win was his second from three career starts after defeating maiden special weight company in his previous start. As the only two-time winner in the field, Hollywood Showbiz holds a significant seasoning advantage. Ken Tohill will ride.

Although he ran a 51.48-second trial time compared to Hollywood Showbiz's 51.33, Explosive Mine still dominated his heat, winning by 11 1/2 lengths in his first start. Trained by Michael Welch, the son of Ghostly Moves has an explosive turn of early foot and was no secret in his qualifier, having been bet down to 5-2. Alfredo Medellin will handle the riding chores.

Other trial winners were Marquee Avenue, who debuted at even money; Mater Raleigh, who will start in post 10; Quicky, who ran to his name in winning his heat by more than six lengths; and Rig's Runner, who drew the rail on Saturday.
