Hollywood Park notes: Proctor finishes one-two in Lucie Manet

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Trainer Tom Proctor swept the first two positions in Friday’s $72,350 Lucie Manet Stakes for fillies and mares with Customer Base and Midnight Music.

Racing at 1 1/4 miles on turf for the first time, Customer Base ($8.60) closed from fourth in a field of six to win by 1 1/2 lengths over Midnight Music, the 8-5 favorite. Miss Pippa was third.

Ridden by Mike Smith for Glen Hill Farm, Customer Base was timed in 2:01.97. A 4-year-old filly by Lemon Drop Kid, Customer Base has won 4 of 13 starts and $211,482. She had been second or third in three stakes in the last year.

Customer Base was 11th in the 2011 BC Juvenile Fillies Turf at Churchill Downs.

“It’s nice to see this filly get a stakes win,” Proctor said.

Big wins for Evans, Headley

There were two milestone wins on Friday evening’s program.

Apprentice jockey Cecily Evans, who claims a 10-pound allowance, won her first race in California on Wrinkle Room ($10.40) in a sprint for $10,000 claimers. Evans, 27, is from Maryland and has been based in California since last summer.

In the following race, Karen Headley, daughter of noted trainer Bruce Headley, won her first race as a trainer with Keep Movin’ ($8.20) in a maiden claimer at 1 1/16 miles. Keep Movin’ was Karen Headley’s second starter. She continues to assist her father with his stable.
