Mr. Commons, shown winning the Grade 2 Aracadia, will end a three-month layoff in Saturday's American Handicap.

The three-time stakes winner Mr. Commons returns from a break of nearly three months in Saturday’s $150,000 American Handicap at Betfair Hollywood Park.

Trained by John Shirreffs for Ian Banwell, Mr. Commons has not started since finishing second to Willyconker in the Grade 1 Frank Kilroe Mile at Santa Anita on March 3. Willyconker is a candidate for the Grade 2 American Handicap, run over a mile on turf.

Earlier at the Santa Anita winter-spring meeting, Mr. Commons won the Grade 3 Sir Beaufort Stakes for 3-year-olds in December and the Grade 2 Arcadia Stakes in February.

Saturday at Hollywood Park, Mr. Commons worked five furlongs in 1:00.80. A 4-year-old colt by Artie Schiller, Mr. Commons has worked steadily in the last two months.

Shirreffs said on Sunday that the American Handicap is a prep for the $300,000 Shoemaker Mile on June 30.

“He’s been pretty solid,” Shirreffs said. “It’s time to gear him back up.”

The list of candidates for the American includes Barney Rebel, Calimonco, Dubai You XYZ, Mobilized, Stormberg, Venomous, and Wilkinson.
Mobilized won the Tiznow Stakes for California-breds over 7 1/2 furlongs on April 28.

Calimonco won the minor Sidd Finch Stakes at Santa Anita on April 1, but was fourth in the Grade 3 San Francisco Mile at Golden Gate Fields on April 28.

◗ Trainer Marty Jones has been fined $750 by track stewards for failing to report that Jaco Red was racing as a gelding in the 10th race on April 28. The April 28th race was Jaco Red’s career debut. He finished 11th in a field of 13, and subsequently finished fifth in a maiden race on May 11.
