Hollywood Park: Mike Mitchell released from hospital

Trainer Mike Mitchell was released from a Southern California hospital on Sunday evening, hours after collapsing near the winner’s circle of an apparent seizure following the sixth race at Betfair Hollywood Park.

Mitchell was resting at home on Monday morning, according to Billy Koch, a friend of the Mitchell family who operates the Little Red Feather Racing partnership.

“He’s doing much better,” Koch said. “He wanted to go to the barn.”

Mitchell had just watched Little Red Feather’s Gutshot Straight win a sprint for $40,000 claimers when he was stricken. He was treated trackside by ambulance personnel before being transported to a hospital in nearby Torrance.

Mitchell was observed at the hospital until he was released in the evening hours, Koch said.

Mitchell, 65, underwent surgery last summer for a brain tumor. The operation kept his activity in racing to a minimum last summer before he gradually began to spend more time at the stable in the morning and at the races in the afternoon.

In March, Mitchell said doctors had told him that the brain tumor had shrunk in size.

In a casual conversation early Sunday afternoon, Mitchell said he was looking forward to the upcoming Del Mar meeting which begins in July. He largely missed last summer’s Del Mar meet while undergoing post-surgical treatment.

On June 29, Mitchell will start leading contender Obviously in the Grade 1 Shoemaker Mile at Hollywood Park.
