Trainer Mel Stute was hospitalized early Sunday after sustaining a head injury in a fall at his home on Saturday evening.
Stute remained hospitalized early Sunday afternoon, and was scheduled to undergo a CT-scan, according to his son, trainer Gary Stute.
“He was coherent and speaking when I saw him,” Stute said of an early morning visit on Sunday.
Stute, 85, has not had a starter since December 2011 but has maintained a presence as a visitor at the races in Southern California in the last year. He is best known as the trainer of Snow Chief, the winner of the 1986 Preakness Stakes and that year’s champion 3-year-old.
