INGLEWOOD, Calif. – John Johny Jak, vanned off after winning Sunday’s $70,800 Robert Kerlan Handicap at Betfair Hollywood Park, was euthanized Sunday evening because of a shoulder injury, trainer Kristin Mulhall said.
John Johny Jak was pulled up about a quarter-mile after the finish and transported to Mulhall’s stable for evaluation. Mulhall said that several veterinarians were consulted in the hours after the race.
“We ended having to put him down,” she said Sunday evening. “It was the hardest thing.”
Owned by Kretz Racing, John Johny Jak won three minor stakes in the last year, including the Brubaker Stakes at Del Mar and Lure Stakes at Hollywood Park in 2011. Last December, John Johny Jak underwent surgery for colic, which kept him out of training until this spring.
The Kerlan was John Johny Jak’s first start since a fourth in the Grade 2 Citation Handicap at Hollywood Park last fall.
A 5-year-old ridgling by Wildcat Heir, John Johny Jak won 9 of 25 starts and $342,279.

He cost me Sundays PICK4, but I was impressed at what a dynamic race he ran after a layoff !
God Bless this little warrior, this game is hard enough betting, much less watching one lose their life running their heart out !

How very sad John Johny Jak had this injury and had to be euthanized. My deepest condolences to his connections. Gone too soon, JJJ. Thank you for your noble efforts and wins. Well done. R.I.P. John Johny Jak.

I was a fan of this horse John Johny Jak. What did I iike about him? While he was not a superstar he was tenacious and game and good looking. He had a bit of positional speed and liked to win. He raced well on the green!
One thing we probably all agree on - nobody likes to see a horse go down or be put down. Horse racing can be cruel - to horses and jockeys and yes even the bettors. It also can be uplifting - this weekend when Camp Victory won the triple bend you had to feel a litttle swell of emotion. I did not pick the horse or cash a ticket and i was happy to see the horse get up for a trainer having brain surgery.
Remember when we post on here - it is fine to ahve a diffrence of opinion - but why make it personal? We love the game or we would not be on here writing. And try and think a good thought for JJJ and his trainer Kristin Mullhall.

he horse broke down after the finish line while stepping in a hole left from the starting gate in movement. The track superintendent should have goneover the track a bit more carefully.

SLIGO JOE finished third, fourth, or fifth against classier company in each of his last four races. He ran fast enough in his last two starts to beat this type on the plunge from $10,000 optional claiming into this $5,000 N1Y field. LATCH LIGHTING only finished fifth as the favorite at this class level last time. He should be a factor today, but he seems more likely to contend in the minor exotic slots than he is to beat this field. STEALTH HERO ran a dull race when he beat just one opponent here on a muddy track in his last race.
