INGLEWOOD, Calif - Jaycito, a Grade 1 winner in 2010, is nearing a return to racing after undergoing surgery to improve his breathing during the summer.
Sunday, Jaycito worked five furlongs in 59.60 seconds at Hollywood Park.
Owned by Zayat Stable and trained by Bob Baffert, Jaycito has 1 win in 6 starts, the Grade 1 Norfolk Stakes at Hollywood Park in October 2010. At the time, Jaycito was trained by Mike Mitchell. This year, ailments have kept Jaycito to two starts. He was fifth in the Grade 2 San Felipe Stakes in March, but missed the Santa Anita and Kentucky derbies because of foot problems.
Jaycito was fifth in an optional claimer at Del Mar in August, a loss that prompted throat surgery.
Baffert said on Sunday that Jaycito will not start in the Grade 1 Malibu Stakes over seven furlongs for 3-year-olds at Santa Anita on Dec. 26. "It's too short," he said.

UNCLE HARRY caught the eye with a solid late run in his local debut last time, just missing despite racing well back early in a race which featured a gate-to-wire winner; he was 2nd two back in his first try on the grass after setting the early pace, and the fact that he's versatile enough to lead or rate gives him added appeal in the finale. EDGE OF GLORY comes out of the same race as the top pick and he was in fact a half-length in front of that rival on the wire, gradually closing on the winner through the lane; certainly deserves a long look off that running line.
