Hollywood Park: Goldencents will target King's Bishop at Saratoga

Trainer Doug O'Neill says Goldencents will stick to sprinting this summer after failures in the Kentucky Derby and Preakness.

Goldencents, the winner of the Santa Anita Derby who was unplaced in the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, will be pointed for the $500,000 King’s Bishop Stakes over seven furlongs for 3-year-olds at Saratoga on Aug. 25, trainer Doug O’Neill said.

O’Neill said that Goldencents is unlikely to race around two turns this summer after finishing 17th in the Kentucky Derby on May 4 and fifth of nine in the Preakness Stakes on May 18.

“We’re thinking about the King’s Bishop,” O’Neill said. “I think his future would be best to go seven furlongs with 3-year-olds. I think he’ll fit all right there.”

O’Neill said Goldencents will have a brief vacation for the rest of this spring, ruling out a potential start in the top 3-year-old race of the Hollywood Park spring-summer meeting – the $150,000 Swaps Stakes over 1 1/8 miles on July 4.

“I’m 99 percent that the plan is to give him some time,” O’Neill said.

Owned by a partnership, Goldencents has won 4 of 8 starts and $1,280,000. Aside from the Santa Anita Derby over 1 1/8 miles on April 6, Goldencents has won two other Grade 3 races – the Delta Downs Jackpot in Louisiana over 1 1/16 miles last November and the Sham Stakes over a mile at Santa Anita in January.
