This victory by Game On Dude in the Grade 2 Charles Town Classic was his fourth straight in a graded stakes.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Game On Dude did not train Friday at Santa Anita, and a workout scheduled for Sunday has been postponed after the 6-year-old showed signs of viral illness.

The top older horse in California, Game On Dude had an elevated temperature Friday morning and left grain in his feed tub. Trainer Bob Baffert cancelled the 6-year-old’s normal training routine Friday, pending another blood test scheduled for Saturday.

“He’s got a viral thing going on, I think,” Baffert said. “It’s minor, and it might not be anything, but I’ve had a lot of sick horses so I’m not taking any chances. He didn’t track (Friday).”

Game On Dude, 13 for 27 with earnings of more than $4.7 million, has won four straight graded stakes including the Santa Anita Handicap and the Grade 2, $1.5 million Charles Town Classic in his most recent start April 20.

As of Friday, Baffert did not expect the setback to jeopardize Game On Dude’s participation July 6 in Grade 1 Hollywood Gold Cup, which he won a year ago.

Baffert said Game On Dude’s temperature Friday was only slightly higher than normal.

“It’s not really a temperature, it was elevated – 101 – and he left a little bit of grain,” Baffert said.

Initial blood tests came back “in the normal range,” he said.

GoD will bounce back with wins in the Gold Cup, Pacific Classic, and Breeders Cup Classic and walk away as horse of the year! Bank it!

Baffert does a very good job, just sayin'.

With all of the criticisms facing racing with breakdowns and drug violations I don't understand how ant true fan of racing or any member can actually bad mouth a highly publicized trainer for doing what's right. Are all you morons trying to kill the sport. Great job Bob and I applaud the barns new safe and careful tactics. You neighsayers are destroying any positive image. During the most public of times for this business.

Glad to hear that the illness is only a virus, rather than something such a heart trouble.

So its a precautionary move. Baffert taking the proper steps to diagnose n treat the horse. Most good stables keep feed and temperature charts daily. Nice to see the barn not missing even the smallest details.

C'mon Thomas. The horse left a little feed. The first thing anyone does is give him a look over and take his temp. Not a small detail that Baffert deserves cudos for. Standard procedure.

Standard for smart barns. Ya gotta give credit where its due. Some could just as well waited a day or two before taking the blood. Temps taken daily. But with a full barn unless the assistant in at 4 am..this coulda been missed. Everything I've read about Baffert since Paynter resumed training and several horses having training accidents has been CAUTIOUSNESS AND CARE BASED. No Derby runners. Finding soft spots for Code West and Power Broker. Operating on Flashback knee. All The Wests decisions maybe. But smart moves. Even Midnight Lucky was spotted smartly in Acorn. And now Game On Dude being backed off a little. I don't like conglomerate types. You know that. But he's not pulling any Lukas or Pletcher moves throwing everything against the wall.

You tell 'em.

Yea he sure told me ct. Bobby got a call that he didn't eat all his feed, he told someone to stick a thermometer in his butt. It was slightly elevated. Nothing wrong with the horse and he missed one day of training. It makes headline news and everyone says what a great trainer Bob is. Just saying ct. Even a greyhound trainer would have done it.

Seems like it's standard procedure for you to disparage Baffert at every conceivable opportunity.
Horse Cents More than 1 year ago
And I'll take that and have no problem with it. But seriously, I didn't disparage him, just pointed out that it's standard to take the temp when a horse is off his feed. You guys want to suck up to him for taking a temp, have at it.

I wonder if Bo Derek is making any progress on the CHRB's investigation of sudden cardiac death of Bob's horses. You bet he's being careful with his horses.

The CHRB came back and said that actually there wasn't anything unusual going on. Typically, everybody misses the retraction.
