Hollywood Park: Examen due for Oceanside at Del Mar

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Examen did not get far on the Triple Crown trail earlier this year.

Trained by Tom Proctor, Examen made his stakes debut in the Grade 2 Coolmore Lexington Stakes at Keeneland in April and finished ninth of 10, racing on the inside early and encountering traffic.

“That was a little rough,” said Proctor’s assistant, Aimee Dollase.

Examen did not start for the rest of the spring. He is expected to make his turf stakes debut in the $100,000 Oceanside Stakes for 3-year-olds at Del Mar on Wednesday, the opening day of that popular meeting.

Judging from his turf races earlier this year, Examen could be a factor in the one-mile race. At Santa Anita on Feb. 9, Examen won a maiden race at 1 1/8 miles on turf. He followed that with a win in optional claimer at a mile on a wet-fast main track on March 7, a performance that led to the Lexington Stakes.

“He’s got potential,” Dollase said.

The Oceanside Stakes is restricted to 3-year-olds who have not won a first-place purse of $50,000 in a stakes at a mile or over this year. The race has been run in divisions in past years, and the same is possible for Wednesday.

The leading candidates includes Rosengold, the winner of three minor turf stakes for 3-year-olds this year; Know More, who won the Grade 2 Best Pal Stakes at Del Mar last summer; Joelito, the winner of an optional claimer at Hollywood Park on May 30; and Den’s Legacy and Rising Legend, the first two finishers of the Generous Stakes at Hollywood Park last November.
