Hollywood Park: Drill may travel to New York for Woody Stephens
Email
INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Drill, the winner of the Grade 3 Laz Barrera Stakes at Betfair Hollywood Park on Saturday, may be bound for New York in June.
Trainer Bob Baffert said that Drill will be kept to stakes around one turn for the foreseeable future, and that the $400,000 Woody Stephens Stakes for 3-year-olds over seven furlongs on June 9 is a potential next start.
“The Woody Stephens is the next logical race, but we’ll play it by ear,” Baffert said.
He emphasized that Drill’s next start “will be a one-turn race.”
The Laz Barrera was Drill’s third stakes win around one turn, preceded by the Grade 1 Del Mar Futurity last September and the Grade 2 San Vicente Stakes at Santa Anita in February. A winner of 4 of 11 starts in his career, Drill has won 4 of 6 starts around one turn. He is winless in five starts around two turns.
Owned by Mike Pegram, Karl Watson and Paul Weitman, Drill has earned $419,710.
Drill closed from third in a field of four to win the Laz Barrera by a half-length over pacesetter American Act.
Well Baffert... Here come them nightmares again...

Trinniberg, Drill, and Hansen could make for an exciting edition of the Woody Stephens. Shackleford and Caleb's Posse might have some tough 3 year olds to face by the end of the year.

Best Bets
Any of LOGAN STREET's last three races at Gulfstream are good enough to overhaul these, the latest against 1-2 Big John B in a richer "beaten" claimer; good spot for first local outing. CHARDSEY rallied smartly from the back of the pack to be a clear second behind front-running Yo Blue under these conditions May 5; having a recent race over the course can't hurt. BARZINI and QUIET DANGER come off wire-to-wire maiden wins and could conceivably cancel themselves out battling for the lead.
